Fats and carbohydrates - their place in a healthy diet

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 6:10 am

Lately it would seem that fats and carbohydrates have both gotten a bad rap. First it was fat that was the culprit in all dietary ills, and low fat diets were all the rage. Then the two switched places, with carbohydrates being the bad guys and fat reigning supreme.

As with most extremes, the truth lies somewhere in the middle. There is no such thing as a bad food, only bad dietary choices. While some foods are naturally better for you than others, there is no reason that all foods cannot be enjoyed in moderation. After all, the most successful diet is not one that you can follow for a day, a week or even a year. On the contrary, the only successful diet and nutrition program is one that you will be able to follow for a lifetime.

Both fats and carbohydrates play an important role in nutrition, and both are important to a healthy diet. It would be impossible and unwise to eliminate all fat from the diet, since fat is important for the production of energy, and for carrying valuable fat soluble vitamins like vitamin D, vitamin E and vitamin K, throughout the body. In addition, fat plays a vital role in regulating various bodily functions.

Even though some fat is essential to a healthy body, too much fat can be harmful. Excessive levels of dietary fats have been implicated in heart disease, stroke, high cholesterol levels and even some cancers. Most nutritionists recommend limiting daily fat intake to less than 20% of calories, although taking that level lower than 10% is not recommended.

Of course not all fats are created equal, and some fats are more harmful than others. Saturated fats and trans fats are generally understood to be more harmful in the diet than polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats. These lighter fats, like canola oil and olive oil, should form the basis of cooking a healthier diet.

Keeping saturated fats and trans fats to a minimum is important to a healthy diet. Trans fats, which are solid at room temperature, are most often found in highly processed foods like cookies, cakes and other baked goods. In addition, trans fats are often found in fried foods and in salty snacks like potato chips. While these foods are fine in moderation, it is best to avoid large quantities of such snacks.

One additional word here about good fats - yes there are such things, and one of the most powerful of these are the so called omega-3 fatty acids. These fats are most often found in fish, and they have shown great promise in preventing and even reversing heart disease and high cholesterol levels.

When limiting your daily intake of fat and cholesterol, it is good to have an understanding of nutritional labels. These government mandated labels can be a huge help to those who take the time to read and understand them. Not only do nutritional labels provide valuable information on calories, fat content and sodium, but they provide valuable information about the most important vitamins and minerals as well.

Like fats, carbohydrates are found in a variety of different foods, some healthier than other. For instance, both Twinkies and whole wheat bread are sources of carbohydrates, but while one can form the basis of a healthy diet, the other is best used as an occasional snack.

In addition to cereals and breads, carbohydrates are also present in fruits and vegetables and in milk and other dairy products. Carbohydrates and fats are both important to a healthy, varied diet.

As with many products, less is often more when it comes to choosing foods rich in carbohydrates. For instance, less refined whole grain bread is generally more nutritious than white bread which has gone through a greater amount of refining. That is because the refining process tends to reduce nutrient content over time.

Of course, there are some elements in the diet that should be limited. Two of these elements are sugar and salt. Most Americans consume too much salt and sugar, and this has led to epidemics of obesity, diabetes, heart disease and other ills. Limiting sugar and salt, while choosing good fats and unrefined carbohydrates, is a great way to maximize the nutritional value of the foods you eat.

Top 3 Back Pain Risk Factors

Filed under: Shopping Resources — admin @ 7:30 pm

Lower back pain is an increasingly common problem in fact four out of five Americans will experience lower back pain at least once in their lifetime.

Properly training the lower back involves selecting the right exercises to work this area and using good technique to make sure that you are getting the most out of the movement. Listed below are three important risk factors that may be causing pain in your lower back.

1. Muscle imbalances: nearly every ache, pain, or injury people suffer from today are mostly caused from muscular imbalances. Over 80% of people have muscle imbalances that go undetected. Over time, these muscle imbalances will cause numerous muscle and joint problems such as wear and tear on the joints, which eventually leads to arthritis, bulging disc or back spasms. An imbalanced muscle is a weak muscle. These weak muscles cannot stabilize the joint in its socket causing the joint to become misaligned and move at a slightly incorrect angle or rotation. When these faulty movements are repeated hundreds of times, the joints, tendons and muscles begin to degenerate.

2. Poor posture: Today’s diverse clientele with varied needs offers a unique challenge to health and fitness professionals. The one-size-fits-all approach to exercise programs is commonly unproductive and potentially dangerous. Many injuries and chronic back pain is a result of cumulative affects overtime.

Faulty postures and poor body mechanics will cause lower back pain and be at least partially attributed to these same faults. Improper movements will cause micro trauma to the joints and soft tissues. You may experience pain initially maybe pain comes and goes and doesn’t get much attention but overtime the problem worsens and aching, pain, or stiffness begins more frequently.

Until you correct the problem not just the symptom your back will be prone to injury or re-injury. The problem (muscle imbalances) the symptoms (poor posture) the solution (Muscle Activation Techniques).

3. Not enough exercise: Inactivity can cause our muscles to shrink and lose strength. This is a natural process, but living an inactive lifestyle (no exercise) will accelerate the loss. Physical inactivity causes an average muscle loss of 5-7 pounds per decade. Strength training is a simple concept it involves briefly working your muscles, on a regular basis, a little more than they are accustomed to working.

This causes your muscles to become stronger and more toned. Also, your tendons, ligaments and bones will be strengthened. This strengthening will make your joints more stable and less prone to injury. Everyday tasks will become easier, such as picking up grocery bags or grandchildren, getting up from a low sofa or going up stairs.

A Call to Action

Muscle Activation Techniques (MAT) combined with the corrective exercise program is critical for combating muscle, joint and lower back pain, for increasing strength, mobility, stability and for staying active and self-sufficient. Research has consistently shown the fitness and health benefits of MAT Therapy and strength training for injury prevention and recovery.

You don’t have to live with lower back pain or any pain for that matter! You can control pain or even reverse it with MAT Techniques and strength training—it will have a great impact on the quality of your life.

Keep Your Cartilage Strong The Natural Way

Filed under: Shopping Resources — admin @ 3:33 pm

Glucosamine & Chondroitin

Glucosamine and Chondroitin are both naturally found in the body, particularly in the cartilage area.

Glucosamine is derived from shellfish shells and is available in different forms such as glucosamine hydrochloride, N-acetyl-glucosamine (NAG), and glucosamine sulfate. Also known as chitosamine, Glucosamine is a form of sugar that is believed to be able to help with the formation and repair of cartilage.

On the other hand, Chondroitin is obtained from tracheas or shark cartilage and is also available in several forms such as chondroitin sulfate, chondroitin sulfuric acid, and chondroitin sulfate. Chondroitin is part of a large protein molecule known as proteoglycan and is used to help give the cartilage elasticity. It also prevents enzymes in the body from disintegrating the building blocks of the cartilage.

Health Benefits

Glucosamine and Chondroitin are recognized as being able to help with osteoarthritis, which is a disorder that affects around 10 million Americans.

Osteoarthritis is a disorder wherein there is a deterioration of the cushioning cartilage between the joint bones. Glucosamine and Chondroitin are known as being able to restore cartilage and help slow down osteoarthritis by forming and repairing cartilage, promoting water retention and elasticity, and at the same time stopping enzymes from disintegrating the cartilage.

Glucosamine and Chondroitin are also said to be able to relieve the symptoms of osteoarthritis by alleviating joint pain, in addition to protecting joints and tendons from injury, and decreasing inflammation.

Studies have shown that the use of Glucosamine and Chondroitin are similar to the effects of pain relievers such as aspirin and ibuprofen, but with less side effects. Currently, Chondroitin is being investigated for a possible remedy in serving as anticoagulants by preventing blood clots.

When Not to Use

Do not take Glucosamine if you are allergic to shellfish, since Glucosamine is derived from it. People who are diabetic should also check their blood sugar levels regularly when taking Glucosamine, being that they are amino sugars and may raise the body’s sugar level.

Meanwhile, when taking Chondroitin at the same time with blood-thinning medications, be sure to check your blood clotting time regularly. Chondroitin is a bit similar to the blood-thinning drug heparin, and so taking it alongside a blood-thinning medication can cause bleeding in some people.

Side Effects

Side effects of Glucosamine and Chondroitin include mild gastrointestinal complaints such as heartburn, nausea, intestinal gas, and softened stools. Generally, taking Glucosamine and Chondroitin are safe and have no extreme side effects.

Filed under: Mathematicians Tips — admin @ 2:27 am

Secured Credit Card is similar to a prepaid credit card since the funds you are using are actually yours and not the issuer of the credit card. Generally people who apply for secured credit card or prepaid credit card are people with poor credit or unemployed. Prepaid Credit Card spending limit is the amount of money you loaded to the card. There are no interest or finance charges on a prepaid card. With secured credit card, your credit line could be from 50% to 100% of your deposit depending on the institution giving you the secured credit. Therefore the company giving you the secured credit card has zero risk.

Secured credit card can be very beneficial because it gives you an opportunity to rebuild your credit history and you are able to make purchases just as if you had an unsecured credit card. Many companies require that you have a credit card to make purchases, such as car rental, airline tickets, etc. Ensure that the company issuing the secured credit, routinely reports customers’ payment history to any of the three main credit bureaus namely Experian, Equifax and Trans Union. This reporting to the credit bureaus will rebuild your credit history over time.

Closing unnecessary accounts and consolidating your bills to make payments more manageable could be an advantage financially. There are no quick fixes for improving your credit report except for mistakes or inaccuracies that can be corrected, hopefully in your favor. Your credit information is maintained by the credit bureaus namely Experience, Equifax, and Trans Union for seven years. Therefore poor credit information will remain on your report for seven years. The good thing is that as negative information disappears with positive information, this will definitely rebuild your credit rating.

Can Credit Search Entries Affect Your Ability to get Approved for a New Loan in the UK?

Filed under: Mathematicians Tips — admin @ 11:19 pm

About Search Entries:

Every time a lender checks your credit history from your credit file (i.e. each time you apply for a loan), your credit-file will have a record of this. These records are known as search entries. The search entries do not generally say whether you were approved or denied credit, but they do reveal the name of the lender(s) processing previous applications. Lenders automatically impart this information back the credit bureaus and see it as an important tool.

As you can imagine, with this information other lenders can see if you have been applying for many, many loans. The lender dealing with your current application would expect to see a few search entries, but if there are more than, say, 20 in a few months he will be very wary, and may reject your application. (Of course he will be adding one more entry to your credit-file himself in the process!).The original reason for a credit search entry being inserted into credit files was to check for fraud, but lenders have since found much value in watching the habits of consumers applying for credit.

There is no specific number of searches that would cause an application to be turned down flat, but as above, too many unrelated credit searches on your credit file will certainly not be helpful in your quest to get approved for credit.

Limiting credit search entries:

Try to limit search entries by only applying for 1 or 2 loans a month. If you see duplicate searches appearing on your credit file for the same loan, these should be removed. Write to the credit agencies to ensure they are. All searches should expire after 2 years, so check that they are deleted after this time and if not you can insist this is done too.

Once your credit file contains a minimal number of credit search entries then you can be sure that you have the best chance for getting approved for your next loan.

Jack Miles, Author of “The Complete U.K. Credit Repair Guide”, produced the guide to help people restore a poor credit rating and enjoy the benefits of good credit. Do You Need To Cut Down 100 Calories A Day? But Don’t Know What 100 Calories Is?

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 9:50 am

The difference between weight loss, and steady or weight gain, can be as little as 100 calories a day. Well, that is according to the American Dietetic Association, and it is very easy to believe the underlying truth in that.

Most overweight people in the US and UK put on weight very slowly over the years. A weight gain of 2lbs per year, which is about average, may seem very little. In fact, it is very little, if it stops there and you take it off again. However, a steady weight gain of 2 lbs per year for 10 years is 20lb. In 20 years it is 40lb. Now, that is a serious weight gain that can increase vulnerability to chronic disease. If you are in your 20’s now, you can look forward to a weight drift upwards of 60 lbs by the time you reach your 50’s.

That, for sure, is not a healthy trend. But the cause of that 2lb weight gain each year could be as little as an extra 100 calories a day regularly over the year. So, if you can cut out 100 calories a day, you may keep your weight under control over the years. Or how about doing that little bit extra that will use 100 calories per day? Neither task is that difficult; you just need to ensure you do it every day.

Examples Of Cutting Out 100 Calories Per Day Intake

Here are just a few examples of what 100 calories a day means, and how you may cut it out of your regular diet:

1. Do you drink non diet soft drinks? An 16 ounce can could add 250 calories, so if you switch drinks to a lower calorie drink, or just cut them out altogether, that’s a significant saving in calorie intake.

2. Are you a beer drinker? Even a 12oz light beer is 100 calories or so, which means cutting out one beer will achieve your daily reduction need.

3. Are you a coffee lover? Do you drink your coffee with whole milk? If yes, you can save 100 calories a day by drinking two of your regular cups with skimmed milk instead of whole.

4. You think salads are low calorie? Maybe, but not if you plaster them with dressing. One packet of French dressing can have 160 calories in, so if you usually use the whole packet in a restaurant, try using just under half instead.

You will find many more examples of easy 100 calorie savings. If you look at your diet now, and then check the calories on all the items you think may be high calorie, you will soon find an easy way to reduce your calorie intake by 100 calories a day. That is not too painful a diet experience.

How To Burn An Extra 100 Calories A Day

Would you prefer to burn that 100 calories instead of cut it out of your diet each day? If so, here are a few ways to burn 100 calories extra:

1. Vigorous cycling on a stationary exercise bike should use up over 100 calories.

2. Swimming energetically for just 10-15 minutes should burn more than 100 calories.

3. Walking at about 3mph pace for half an hour should also use up more than 100 calories. You can burn up 100 calories in only 10 minutes that way.

4. Do some aerobics for 15 minutes. That alone could shed that 100 calories. Make it enjoyable by putting on some of your favourite dance music.

5. Do you like golf? Play more often if you can. Just half an hour of golf activity, carrying your own clubs, could help you shed 120 calories.

There are many more similar examples to the above, so make them as pleasurable and easy as possible. 100 calories intake or burn is very modest. Do it every day, and your weight may be under control. Start while you’re young and normal weight, and that’s a good investment for your future health.

Teachers: Could You Use The 10 Best Classroom Management Interventions To Turnaround Problem Behavio

Filed under: Education Resources — admin @ 12:31 am

Unless you work with easy, mellow students, you will love our “Top 10 Best Classroom Management Interventions to Turnaround Problem Student Behavior.” These interventions are taken from Youth Change Workshop’s Solution Center (http://www.youthchg.com). There are hundreds of strategies on the site, ready to be used by teachers, counselors and youth workers. If classroom or group management is an on-going nightmare, it will take more than these ten new techniques to transform your class or group into a dream, so be sure to check out the web site for methods that are especially designed to rein in even the most uncontrollable students.

1. Teacher Telegram (or Counselor, Therapist… Telegram) A veteran, “world-class” special ed teacher was working with a student when the child suddenly flipped over his desk and fled the room. You won’t believe what this teacher had done! She had written on the student’s math paper! That child interpreted that help to mean that the teacher thought he was too stupid to do the work himself, and bolted from the room in anger. Of course, had this teacher known that the child would react in that manner, she would have been happy to let the child do the writing, or she could have written on scratch paper instead.

This incident is a classic, common situation that could have easily been avoided if only the teacher had known the child’s views. The Teacher Telegram surveys your youngsters to gather the information you need to avoid problems that can perhaps be averted or minimized. Make your telegram have about five finish-the-sentence statements, and include queries like: “Some of the things I like about your class are…,” “The one thing I wish you would do differently is…,” “The one thing that helps me is…,” “The one thing that does not help me is…,” and “My other comments are…” You may be pleasantly surprised at how much this little device, done periodically, can reduce or end problems.

2. Studies have indicated that when girls are involved in sports, they are far less likely to become pregnant, drop out or engage in serious misbehavior. To encourage your female students to consider sports, ask your girls to craft collages or posters entitled “Silly Boys, Sports Are for Girls.”

3. A Taste of the Real World It can be very hard to convince youth that they will desperately need education. For children who have very poor reading skills, here’s an interesting and compelling activity. Create a menu in a foreign language and ask the students to order. To get you started, here are some Dutch dinner items, but you can also go to a page like and enter English menu terms and have the words translated into German, French or other language. You may wish to actually serve some of the items your students order. Select items that are very likely to be viewed as distasteful, so you might consider offering treats like sardines, stewed prunes and liver, foods that might be thoroughly disliked, but are easy to purchase.

Choose Your Dinner Gebakken garnalen (Pan-Roasted Shrimp) Gegrilde lamskoteletten (Grilled Lamb Chops) Vegeratische pastachotel (Vegetarian Pasta) Rijstpudding met frambozencoulis (Rice Pudding) When your students protest that they can’t figure out what to do, let them know that could be their on-going adult experience in the world if they don’t learn to read.

4. Education– You Can’t Live Life Without It Ask your students to list out the most difficult things that they may face during their lives. Elicit answers like manage a serious illness or find a job. After reviewing the list, ask the students to identify if education would help or hurt in each situation. Assist students to note that education almost always helps, and never hurts. Assist students to realize: Education– You Can’t Live Life Without It.

5. There’s Always Welfare Hurry up. Welfare is going the way of the buggy and 8 track tape deck. The number of welfare recipients has dropped a phenomenal 50% in the past six years. Plus, in most cases, you can be on welfare for five years and then you are out for life,– yes, life. The amount of money given out is down by as much as 90% in some places. The average person may live nearly 80 years so welfare may be available only 6% of the time. To convey how tiny 6% is to your youngsters, give 6% of your class a small treat, like a mint. Or, give each student $300 in play money and then take all but 6% away, leaving each youngster with just $18.

6. Three Little Lies To convincingly teach students how hard it is to tell and keep a lie, ask each youngster to tell three lies about things that are occurring that day. So, a typical lie might be: “I have pink hair,” said by a brunette. Ask students to repeat each lie at least three times an hour all day. The next day, discuss how much energy, concentration and focus it took to maintain those lies, and relate the discussion to actual lies students have told in the past. Include in the discussion: “Who does lying really fool?” Assist students to realize that in many ways, the liar really most fools himself or herself.

7. Pay Attention Adults often expect young people to magically know how to pay attention, but no one may have actually taught the child how to do so. To teach the skills needed to pay attention, teach each of these five skills one at a time: Get your area ready, get yourself ready, watch the action, listen to the action, control your body. You should use pictures, rag dolls or other attention-grabbing devices to teach and drill the skills into habits. But, until you teach the skills, you shouldn’t expect them.

8. Can You Compute? Internet and/or computer skills are becoming required for almost any job. You may have to scan a badge to clock in at your job, or log onto a network to get your assignments. Have your students strut their stuff by performing internet or computer tasks. Here’s one to start: Find where to get bakeapples, and locate a shipper to transport. Answer: Bakeapples are a Newfoundland, Canada food; UPS could provide shipping. Discuss with students where they can hone key internet and computer skills.

9. Computers Rule For good or bad, computers are becoming absolutely key to everyday work and living. More and more mail is being sent over the internet, but at the same time, spam is becoming a bigger and bigger hassle. Here at Youth Change, we receive about 300 spams each day. It has gotten harder and harder to spot the real e-mail from the junk e-mail. In fact, an invitation to present our workshop in Europe was at first deleted as our spam deletion program thought it was junk mail. So, save up your real mail and junk e-mail (eliminating offensive or personal items) then ask students to sort through a very large amount of e-mail. Alternatively, create simulated e-mails to use instead. Note how many times important items like bills, renewal notices, and password information, are deleted. Be sure to include bogus virus alerts, e-mails containing “viruses”, and deceptive offers in the e-mails you give students to process. When students mishandle items, note that education and computer training can help.

10. Misbehaved Employees Wanted To show students that present classroom management problems, that misbehavior won’t be tolerated in the adult world, ask them to search the employment classified ads for employers who seek employees with behavior problems.
